HD Ratings: Debate Sends Off Benefits and Billy

TV3’s leaders debate on Wednesday was streets ahead of Benefits Street in the ratings.

The controversial Channel 4 series averaged only 3.8% – 4.8% of the major demographics compared to the debate’s 7.1% – 8.3% and since its premiere two weeks ago, has shed half its audience.

The debate won the 8.30 hour in the 18-39, 18-49 and 25-54 demos but TV2’s comedies — The Big Bang Theory (6.3% – 9.3%) and 2 Broke Girls (7.1% – 10.2%) – were more popular with household shoppers with kids.

TV One’s HD premiere of Billy Connolly’s Big Send Off (2.3% – 3.4%) also struggled against Paul Henry’s post-debate analysis (3.4% – 5.3%).

But the winners of the 9.30 hour were TV2’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine (6.4% – 9.5%) and Surviving Jack (4.4% – 7.4%).

However, TV2’s 7.30 comedies — Mike & Molly (9.1% – 12.3%) and Undateable (6.5% – 8.9%) – weren’t as competitive against TV3’s The Block NZ (8.2% – 11.7%), which won the hour in all four key demos and was well ahead of TV One rival My Kitchen Rules NZ (4.2% – 8.0%).

Week-on-week, TV One was down sharply, TV2 was up, and TV3 made modest gains.

Wednesday’s peak-hour HD channel ratings and shares were:

  • A18-49: TV One, 5.3 rating/18.6 share; TV2, 7.4 rating/25.8 share; TV3, 6.3 rating/22.1 share

On Tuesday, relatively few watched TV3’s HD movie premiere of The Watch, which averaged only 2.1% – 4.3% of the key demos off the back of The Block NZ’s 7.3% – 10.3%.

Instead, 4.0% – 8.0% opted for TV One’s The Mentalist and 5.9% – 9.2% for TV2’s The Amazing Race: Australia v NZ.

The race was tighter at 9.30, when Embarrassing Bodies Down Under (3.0% – 4.5%) was only slightly ahead of The Watch and TV One’s season premiere of Unforgettable (1.1% – 2.8%) verged on the forgettable.

The network’s MKRNZ (4.5% – 8.3%) also finished third at 7.30, when TV2’s Don’t Trust Andrew Mayne (8.0% – 12.1%) won the half-hour but lead-out Motorway Patrol (6.6% – 9.0%) couldn’t overtake The Block NZ.

Week-on-week, TV2’s ratings improved and the other networks’ slipped.

Tuesday’s peak-hour HD channel ratings and shares were:
