HD Ratings: Designs’ Ratings Grand

Grand Designs Revisited rated through the roof on Thursday.

TV3’s sturdy staple didn’t win its slot outright but was more competitive than it has been against TV1’s Britain’s Got Talent and TV2’s reality shows.

The season finale averaged 3.4% – 6.1% of the commercial demographics, and built over the 7.30 hour to out-rate BGT in three of the four quarter-hour segments among 25-54 year-olds and household shoppers with kids.

Moreover, it did so off the back of a dismal lead-in, with Come Dine With Me NZ averaging only 1.4% – 3.6% against TV1’s Seven Sharp (6.5% – 9.7%) and TV2’s Shortland Street (9.3% – 15.0%).

TV3’s season finale of Lost & Found averaged a solid 4.2% – 5.8% given the competition (TV2’s The Undateables, which averaged 7.1% – 9.4%) and helped lead-out Age Gap Love (4.3% – 5.6%) win in all the key demos except HHS/k.

TV2’s Agents of SHIELD (3.2% – 5.1%) was down on last week’s episode while TV1’s Word Up could muster only 2.0% – 3.8% and Upper Middle Bogan, 1.0% – 3.3%.

Despite TV3’s gains, TV2 won the night in three of the four key demos while TV1 dominated in the fourth:

TV2 was also tops on Wednesday, with its untouchable line-up of Shortland Street, My Kitchen Rules, The Big Bang Theory and 2 Broke Girls, while even Once Upon a Time improved over previous weeks.

TV3’s movie Wanted flopped and TV1’s excellent This Town (2.3% – 3.8%) undeservedly languished for viewers ahead of underperforming Undercover Boss USA (1.0% – 2.0%).

TV3 had a better night Tuesday, when its NCIS combo rated stronger than normal, trouncing TV1’s The Mentalist and Aquarius and even challenging TV2’s Empire and Grey’s Anatomy in the 25-54 and HHS/k demos.

TV1’s Monday crime dramas Criminal Minds and Forever were formidable in these demos, seesawing with TV3’s Married at First Sight and Reality Trip in the viewership that both networks covet, 25-54.

But neither network’s line-up could match the pulling power of TV2’s MKR and Tabatha Takes Over, although the latter lost to Forever among HHS/k.
