HD Ratings: DNA Newcomer a Dynamite Hit

TV1’s premiere of The DNA Detectives on Wednesday won the 8.30 hour with 6.2% – 9.3% of the commercial demographics.

It out-rated TV2’s The Big Bang Theory (6.1% – 8.7%) and Mom (5.1% – 6.7%) in all the key demos except 18-39, where it seesawed with the sitcoms.

But it beat the first half of TV3’s The X Factor UK outright, with the latter averaging 3.5% – 5.7% over two hours off the back of sizzling ratings for The Block NZ: Villa Wars (7.3% – 14.1%).

The DIY contest won the 7.30 hour in all the key demos despite having a much smaller lead-in than TV1’s factual-ent or TV2’s comedies.

Fair Go averaged 7.4% -10.5% and Rachel Hunter’s Tour of Beauty 6.2% – 11.3%, leaving The Middle (4.9% – 9.0%) and Black-Ish (3.0% – 5.4%) to finish third for the hour, despite a 9.5% – 18.4% lead-in from Shortand Street.

TV2 would have hoped that hammocking Black-Ish between The Middle and Big Bang would have given the struggling newcomer a lift.

But the strategy seems doomed given The Middle’s no match for The Block and Big Bang’s taken a big hit from DNA.

The news didn’t get better for TV2 at 9.30, either, when The Flash (2.1% – 3.1%) lost to both TV1’s The Island With Bear Grylls (3.7% – 4.6%), which benefitted from a stronger lead-in, and the second half of X Factor UK (except in the 18-39 demo).

As a result, TV2 went from traditionally winning Wednesday night to losing it while TV1 won all of the core demos and TV3 was runner-up in two:
