HD Ratings: Flash Leads Crowded Drama Field

TV3 this week reversed its drama woes with a rebound for two of its most popular series and a solid start for Thursday’s season premiere of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

CSI was up against week two of TV2’s The Flash as well as quality drama premieres on TV One (Love Child) and Prime (Downtown Abbey).

The ageing procedural won the 8.30 hour among household shoppers with kids and was competitive in the 25-54 demographic.

It averaged 4.2% – 8.5% of all the key demos off the back of The Block NZ’s 9.2% – 13.5%, which dominated its time slot.

While The Flash was more popular in the age demos, it rated only a modest 6.0% – 6.7% — although that was enough to win given the level of free-to-air drama overload.

Love Child rated 2.6% – 5.5% against CSI and Downtown Abbey  (1.5% – 2.6%) but drew only 3.7% of 25-54 year-olds — the same demo its rivals targeted.

Arrow (3.7% – 4.6%) won the 9.30 hour except among HHS/k, who opted for TV3’s Motive (2.9% – 6.6%), which rated better in a later slot than it had previously at 8.30.

That may have been because of the soft competition on TV One, with Coverband averaging merely 1.7% – 2.3% and Short Poppies 0.5% – 2.1%.

Thursday’s peak-hour HD channel ratings and shares were:

  • A18-49: TV One, 3.6 rating/13.7 share; TV2, 7.5 rating/28.7 share; TV3, 5.7 rating/21.5 share
  • A18-39: TV One, 3.3 rating/12.5 share; TV2, 8.3 rating/31.4 share; TV3, 5.7 rating/21.5 share
  • A25-54: TV One, 4.4 rating/15.0 share; TV2, 7.4 rating/25.4 share; TV3, 6.7 rating/23.2 share
  • HHS/k: TV One, 5.1 rating/16.1 share; TV2, 9.4 rating/29.6 share; TV3, 8.6 rating/27.1 share.

TV3’s Gang Related (1.7% – 4.6%) continued to struggle on Wednesday, breaking out only among HHS/k opposite TV2’s Devious Maids (2.6% – 5.5%).

Earlier, TV One’s Intrepid NZ (2.4% – 4.5%) finished third after TV2’s sitcom re-runs and TV3’s 3rd Degree.

The current affairs hour was helped by lead-in The Block NZ averaging 7.8% – 11.7% against My Kitchen Rules NZ (3.8% – 8.4%) and TV2’s Mike & Molly (5.7% – 7.5%) and Undateable (4.8% – 5.3%), which is being dumped for re-runs of The Middle.

On Tuesday, TV3’s flagship dramas rebounded after rating dismally the previous week: The Blacklist averaged 5.7% – 6.9% and Sons of Anarchy 4.5% – 6.5%.

Blacklist seesawed with TV One’s The Mentalist (4.5% – 7.3%) and the premiere of TV2’s The Bogan Hunters (5.4% – 6.5%) but SOA was well ahead of Unforgettable (1.8% – 4.0%) and neck-and-neck with Most Embarrassing Bodies (4.2% – 7.4%).
