HD Ratings: Golf Comedy Reverses TV3’s Rough Patch

Replacing Crisis and the latest season of Hawaii Five-O with an 18-year-old Adam Sandler comedy helped to stop the ratings rot for TV3 on Tuesday.

Indeed, week-on-week in peak-hour TV3 was up in all the key demographics, and notably so with viewers aged 18-39, 18-49 and 25-54.

Over two hours Happy Gilmore averaged 4.3% – 4.8% and was more popular than the previous week’s Crisis and H5O in all the key demos except household shoppers with kids.

It drew up to twice as many 18-39 year-olds and was comfortably ahead of its predecessors in the 18-49 and 25-54 demos.

But the ancient golfing comedy was easily out-distanced by TV2’s own movie repeat, Killers (6.4% – 7.5%), which dominated post-8.30 and lost to the season finale of Britain’s Got Talent only among HHS/k .

BGT averaged 4.2% – 9.6%, coming third among 18-39 year-olds but finishing ahead of Happy Gilmore in the other key demos.

Killers was helped by its weak TV3 competition and a big lead-in from My Kitchen Rules (12.7% – 17.6%), which left in its dust TV One’s Highway Cops (6.5% – 12.7%) and TV3’s The House That £100k Built (3.6% – 4.4%).

Tuesday’s peak-hour HD channel ratings and shares were:

  • A18-49: TV One, 5.8 rating/19.7 share; TV2, 9.2 rating/31.1 share; TV3, 4.9 rating/16.5 share
  • A18-39: TV One, 5.0 rating/17.7 share; TV2, 9.3 rating/33.1 share; TV3, 5.0 rating/17.8 share
  • A25-54: TV One, 7.6 rating/22.8 share; TV2, 9.8 rating/29.5 share; TV3, 5.2 rating/15.7 share
  • HHS/k: TV One, 10.4 rating/28.7 share; TV2, 11.6 rating/32.0 share; TV3, 5.6 rating/15.4 share.

  1. Never underestimate the public taste re Happy Gilmore. Killers probably offered people the impression and the alternative that they were watching an Oscar-winner, complete with putter and golf balls!

  2. Other way ’round. Happy Gilmore is Adam Sandler’s Citizen Kane.
