HD Ratings: Grey’s Win Not Black and White

The season nine premiere of Grey’s Anatomy largely won its slot in key demographics on Monday.

But the last half-hour of The X Factor NZ proved too irresistible, with viewers switching over in the middle section of the hospital soap to see the talent quest’s double-elimination round.

Grey’s Anatomy averaged 9.6% – 14.5% of the key demos and X Factor, over two hours, 10.0% – 13.5%.

Grey’s debuted on the back of an hour-long Shortland Street (18.1% – 29.6%) and re-run of The Big Bang Theory (12.4% – 18.2%).

Grey’s new stablemate, Wentworth, which is airing in SD but can be downloaded in HD, captivated 8.1% – 11.4% and robbed Taken of its initial audience on TV3.

But the hostage drama rebounded to win the second half of its slot opposite Shameless (3.9% – 4.5%) to average 6.9% – 7.3% overall.

The night’s biggest HD losers were Castle (1.0% – 4.8%), and its lead-in, Criminal Minds (3.9% – 6.7%).
