HD Ratings: Johnsons Not So Mighty

Concerns about the end of a golden age to NZ drama raised in this morning’s Media column in the NZ Herald will be heightened by the dismal debut of The Almighty Johnsons on Thursday.

The season three premiere averaged only 4.2% – 4.9% of the key demographics, on the back of the season finale of Chelsea NZ’s Hottest Home Baker rating 5.8% – 10.6%.

TAJ had the disadvantage of going head-to-head with a double-episode finale of Once Upon a Time, which averaged 6.1% – 8.3% for its first hour.

But even a re-run of Miranda on TV One was twice as popular with household shoppers and the demo both TV One and TV3 target, adults 25-54.

The competition will be even tougher for TAJ next week, when Arrow takes over the 8.30 hour on TV2.

The second half of OUAT averaged 6.6% – 10.6% to largely win its hour while a re-run of Bones could muster only 2.8% – 3.3%.

More bad news for TV3 is the loss of Home and Away, which was its highest-rating show on Thursday: 7.4% – 11.0%.

It rated even higher on Wednesday evening — 8.2% – 14.7% — and while current affairs hour 3rd Degree retreated from its season high of the previous week, it still rated an above-average 4.7% – 8.4%.

But TV2’s HD juggernauts, from Shortland Street to its back-to-back sitcoms and Arrow carried the rest of the night, although TV One’s One Born Every Minute did out-rate The Big Bang Theory and 2 Broke Girls among HHS.

  1. And people pick on me for hating TVNZ while loving TV3 … REALLY feel for TV3 🙁

  2. I do feel for TV3 but this is the world of competitive commercial television. You win some and lose some. After reading today’s Herald article I’m concerned about their output deals. I do hope they retain their output deal with Fox and dont let that slip to TVNZ.

  3. They have no one to blame but themselves for their current mess. As for TAJ – season three “premiere” was meh. They should have stopped with season two.
