HD Ratings: Ramsay Reins in Westside

Shrewd counter-programming by TVNZ 2 has turned Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back into a foil for Three’s hitherto top-ratingĀ Westside.

On Monday, the reality show won the 8.30 hour in three of the four core commercial demographics but Westside dominated in the demo that matters most to Three, 25-54.

It averaged 5.5% of this group compared to Ramsay’s 5.0%. But in the other demos the gap was wider in Ramsay’s favour, with 4.7% of 18-49 (vs 4.1%), 4.3% of 18-39 (vs 3.1%) and 6.4% of household shoppers with kids (vs 4.0%).

Moreover, Ramsay achieved this on the back of a lower-rating lead-in than Westside’s.

After a strong debut last week, in which it out-rated The Block NZ in all the key demos except HHS/k, this week’s Travel Guides (Australia) lost to it across the board but still was well ahead of TVNZ 1’s Fair Go and Highway Cops.

Ramsay’s popularity and the weakness of Westside’s lead-out also are helping to turn Grey’s Anatomy spin-off Station 19 into a hit for TVNZ 2.

Monday’s episode won the 9.30 hour in the four core demos and was up sharply on the previous week’s, averaging 5.8% of HHS/k (vs 3.0%) and 3.4% of 25-54 (vs 2.8%).

In TVNZ 2’s target 18-49 demo, its average improved from 2.6% to 2.8%.

Three’s Humans, meanwhile, continues to squander Westside’s viewership, averaging only 1.7% of 25-54 and 0.9% of 18-49, and was out-rated by TVNZ 1’s limping Lucifer in every key demo except 18-39.

The outcome was a highly competitive Monday in the 25-54 demo, which Three narrowly won with a 24.6% share compared to 2’s 23.5% and 1’s 22.4%. But in the other core demos, 2 dominated.
