HD Ratings: Revenge Not So Sweet (and Seven Not So Sharp)

TV3’s historic 7pm win against TV One on Tuesday, when Campbell Live out-rated Seven Sharp even in the 5+ demographic, wasn’t the only setback for TVNZ.

TV2 programmers would have been disappointed Revenge averaged 7.5% – 10.2% of the key demos given summer re-runs and a primetime recap special preceded the double-episode season premiere.

This time last year Go Girls averaged 12.3% – 16.2% in the same slot, against similar competition (Frozen Planet, NCIS).

True, it was Revenge’s first outing at 8.30 Tuesday, and it will never be as popular as Go Girls.

But in light of the publicity blitzkreig, expectations would have been higher than ratings that were lower than a year ago at 9.30 Monday, when Revenge averaged 9.7% -14.7%.

Not having to compete with a Harry Potter movie for the first time in its run allowed TV One’s Africa to post its highest viewership yet — 4.4% – 9.2% — while TV3’s NCIS was steady on 5.9% – 7.0% (sister show Los Angeles averaged 4.8% – 7.4%).

Campbell Live’s win helped to boost Modern Family’s average, to 5.8% – 6.6%, but its lead-out Go On dipped from last week’s premiere, to 4.0% – 5.1%.

And while Campbell Live averaged 4.3% – 7.1% against Seven Sharp’s 3.0% – 5.4%, Shortland Street remained untouchable on 12.4% – 20.2%.

More New Zealanders watched TV3’s flagship current affairs programme Campbell Live last night than rival Seven Sharp, the first time in the history of Campbell Live that the TV3 show has beaten TV One in the 5+ demographic.

On Tuesday 12 February, Campbell Live was watched by an average audience of 352,600 viewers, 55,900 more than the 296,700 that tuned into Seven Sharp.

It was also the first time TV3 has ever attracted more 5+ viewers than TV One in the 7pm weeknight timeslot.

Campbell Live also increased its lead over Seven Sharp in the key commercial demographics, with 127,600 25-54 year-olds tuning in (compared with the 99,100 watching Seven Sharp) and 90,600 18-49 year-olds (compared with 78,400).

Director of news and current affairs Mark Jennings says Campbell Live has led the news agenda so far in 2013, and deserved to be watched by a broad audience.

“For us, in-depth daily coverage of the stories and issues that matter to Kiwis is central to the future of current affairs,” he says.

“Viewers are clearly telling us this is what they want; substance and not once over lightly.”

  2. “Viewers are clearly telling us this is what they want; substance and not once over lightly.” You’re kidding me, aren’t you? The 7.00pm slot has for the past 10 years been for the tabloid news watcher and ambulance chasers. They may as well show the E Channel.

  3. What a great achievement for the Campbell Live team and long may it continue. TVNZ needs to rethink its strategy and reintroduce Close Up with a capable host/interviewer!!
