HD Ratings: Road Cops and Robots Rock

TV3’s Monday ratings got a lift from Road Cops getting into top gear and I, Robot still having surprising pulling power.

As a result, TV3 posted big gains in its Monday night ratings and shares over the previous week while TV One’s improved more modestly but enough for it to win the night with adults 25-54 (albeit by a smidgen) and household shoppers.

TV2 suffered unusually heavy losses, with its hitherto dominant two-hour comedy block proving more vulnerable than usual to TV3’s reality/action mix.

Road Cops rated an impressive 8.2% – 8.7% of the key demographics on the back of Campbell Live’s 3.1% – 5.9%.

The Middle was more popular — 9.8% – 11.8% — but only by a point or so among adults 18-39, 18-49 and 25-54.

Moreover, The Middle had a much bigger lead-in with Shortland Street’s 14.8% – 22.5%, making Road Cops’ competitiveness all the more remarkable.

The season finale of The GC also rated well, averaging 7.1% – 8.3% opposite Trophy Wife’s 8.0% – 10.9%.

But viewers started to desert TV2 as TV3’s re-run of I, Robot and TV One’s Person of Interest kicked off.

With the advantage of MasterChef NZ as its lead-in (5.6% – 13.3%), the latter averaged 3.3% – 10.9% to win the 25-54 and household shopper demos.

But it quickly shed these with lead-out The Following (1.2% – 3.7%).

I, Robot capitalised on this, building in its second half to win the 9.30 hour and average overall 6.1% – 7.6%.

In its first half, it was neck and neck with Super Fun Night (7.0% – 9.3%), except among HHS, and out-rated Brooklyn Nine-Nine (4.0% – 6.3%).

TV2’s Kitchen Nightmares proved to be a half-baked replacement for The Walking Dead, with Monday’s season premiere averaging only 2.4% – 3.4%.

Monday’s peak-hour HD channel ratings and shares were:

  • Adults 18-49: TV One, 5.8 rating/18.6 share; TV2, 7.3 rating/23.4 share; TV3, 7.2 rating/22.9 share
  • Adults 18-39: TV One, 4.8 rating/16.3 share; TV2, 7.2 rating/24.2 share; TV3, 7.4 rating/25.50 share
  • Adults 25-54: TV One, 8.0 rating/22.9 share; TV2, 7.3 rating/21.0 share; TV3, 7.9 rating/22.8 share
  • HHS: TV One, 10.8 rating/26.6 share; TV2, 9.7 rating/24.1 share; TV3, 8.8 rating/21.7 share.
