HD Ratings: Sporting Chance for TV3

After Shark Tank replacement Heroes Reborn tanked on Monday, TV3 would have been heartened by Humans ending its Tuesday run on a high ahead of 7 Days of Sport being a winner.

The Channel 4 sci-fi drama averaged 1.5% – 4.8% of the commercial demographics to win the 8.30 hour in the 25-54 race.

Moreover, if the trend of the past two weeks continue, TV3 can expect Humans’ 25-54 consolidated rating to jump another three points.

While the overnight ratings weren’t sensational, the show still topped TV1’s premiere of The Player (3.4% – 4.2%) in the demo that matters most to these networks and tied with it in another (18-49).

Although TV2’s Step Dave (4.3% – 6.4%) dominated the hour, its lead-out, the season premiere of Empire (3.1% – 6.8%), narrowly lost to TV3’s 7 Days of Sport in the 18-39, 18-49 and 25-54 demos.

Both 9.30 shows rated well ahead of TV1’s Battle Creek (2.4% – 2.9%) except among household shoppers with kids, where 7DoS tumbled to a 1.1% low.

Earlier in the night, Reno Rumble (4.3%- 7.1%) proved too powerful for the premiere of TV3’s The Block NZ: Villa Wars (3.9% – 4.6%) — although the contest was tight in the 18-49 and 25-54 demos.

In the younger demos, both shows were beaten by TV1’s Purina Pound Pups to Dog Stars (5.4% – 6.0%).

TV3’s advertising department reports that despite the issues some viewers experienced with The Block’s premiere because of a Sky TV outage – which may have had an impact on the ratings –  “3NOW has seen streaming views 88% up on last year” while 7DoS pulled in 1700 total VOD streams.

As for who won Tuesday night’s HD ratings overall, TV1 and TV2 notched up much higher channel shares than TV3 but week-on-week the latter’s improved significantly (except among HHS/k):

  1. I quite liked Humans but nearly gave it a miss at the half way point but it got a bit quicker. Not sure what they will do in series 2 next year. Got to about 45 minutes in Heroes but will watch the rest most likely Friday.
