HD Ratings: The Block Rockets Out of Starting Blocks UPDATED

Monday’s season-two premiere of The Block NZ hammered the competition, averaging a mega 11.4% – 15.3% of the key demographics.

The series, which airs Monday-Wednesday, picked up steam over the 7.30 hour, as viewers switched over from TV2’s HD sitcoms.

Both The Middle (8.0% – 10.8%) and Suburgatory (6.0% – 9.5%) were down sharply on the previous week.

But viewership of TV One’s Dog Squad (5.5% – 8.98%) and Life Flight (4.6% – 9.5.%) was steady over the course of their respective half-hours.

The Block NZ’s popularity helped its lead-out, n HD re-run of Predators (6.0% – 7.3%), to win its slot with adults 25-54 and challenge Grey’s Anatomy (6.3% – 9.2%) and Private Practice (4.2% – 8.2%) in the 18-39 and 18-49 demos.

The hospital dramas were followed by the premiere of another, Monday Mornings, which averaged 2.6% – 5.6% to largely win its hour ahead of Orange is the New Black (1.6% – 4.1%).

TV One’s HD dramas took a hit, with Person of Interest averaging only 5.2% – 7.9% and Castle 2.2% – 4.5%.


Since posting this, MediaWorks has reported series two of The Block NZ launched to a bigger audience than the first series, which was TV3’s top-rating show for 2012. “The first episode of The Block NZ last night attracted an average audience of 412,400 viewers (5+), a 10% increase on the 374,600 the programme launched with in 2012. 801,500 viewers tuned in during the one-hour launch episode, up from 732,200 in 2012 (5+ cume).vIn the key commercial demographics, the launch episode won a 33.4% share of the 25-54 demographic, and was popular family viewing with a 34.6% share in the Main Household Shoppers with Children demographic.”
