HD Ratings: Three Reclaims Friday Night

Game of Games is no longer a game changer for TVNZ 2 while its newest Friday folly, Japandemonium, flopped in last week’s debut.

TVNZ 2 had been chipping away at Three’s light-en supremacy on Fridays with last month’s launch of Game of Games, which started strongly and at one point out-rated The Graham Norton Show, and the return of Naked Attraction.

The latter continues to dominate the 9.30 hour but last week’s Game of Games averaged only 2.1% of 2’s target audience, 18-49 year olds, and 1.9% of Three’s top demographic, 25-54 year-olds.

In both groups, it was beaten by Three’s Norton re-run, which averaged 4.4% and 6.0% respectively.

Norton easily trounced TVNZ 1’s extended episode of MasterChef Australia, which averaged only 3.9% of 25-54 and 2.5% of 18-49.

But only two weeks ago, both Games and MasterChef were beating Norton. A key reason appears to be Sky Sport 1’s live Super Rugby coverage was stealing more of Norton’s audience whereas last week’s Super Rugby was a replay.

Japandemonium did improve on its predecessor, season nine re-runs of The Big Bang Theory, which the previous week averaged 1.9% of 25-54 and 1.8% of 18-49.

But it lost TVNZ 2 viewers in both demos before Naked Attraction lured them back, albeit against weaker competition, Fail Army.

While the latter couldn’t maintain 7 Days’ lead-in, its 25-54 viewership (2.3%) was up sharply on timeslot predecessor The Spinoff TV’s (1.9%) and it easily out-rated TVNZ 1’s A Place to Call Home.

The problem for Three is 7 Days ends its season tonight and its replacement, re-runs of Live at the Apollo, may allow Japandemonium to build, especially since TVNZ 2 dominates from 7.00-8.00 with Shortland Street and The Simpsons.
