HD Ratings: TV2 Magic Special a Curse for TV One

TV2’s pre-emption of HD sitcoms The Middle and Suburgatory for a magic special on Monday appears to have dented sister channel TV One’s ratings rather than rival TV3’s.

Overall, Cosentino: The Magic, The Mystery rated slightly better than the sitcoms in most of the key demographics, averaging 10.2% – 13.8%.

But any marginal gains were at TV One’s expense, which isn’t surprising given how the channel’s helped to popularise illusionists with its Dynamo: Magician Impossible series (which next week returns to screen to screen twice-weekly: 7.30 Mondays and Tuesdays).

Whereas TV3’s The Block NZ was stable, with 10.7% – 13.6%, TV One’s HD reality duo of Dog Squad (3.0% – 8.1%) and Life Flight (2.9% – 9.3%) each shed a couple of points.

TV3’s umpteenth re-run of Die Hard 2 also fared well, averaging 6.2% – 7.8% — which was enough for the network to win the night with its target audience, adults 25-54.

The first hour also was competitive with TV2’s Grey’s Anatomy (8.2% – 10.6%) in the 18-39 and 18-49 demos and out-rated TV One’s Person of Interest (4.4% – 8.2%) in all the key demos except household shoppers.

Replacing Private Practice with Kitchen Nightmares lifted TV2’s 9.30 ratings, with Gordon Ramsay’s return averaging 6.0% – 9.2% compared to the medical drama’s 4.4% – 8.4% the previous week (in its new 10.30 slot, PP could muster only 2.7% – 4.0%).

TV One’s 9.30 drama, Castle, finished third, with 2.2% – 7.3%.

  1. TV One shouldn’t be worried as they will be screening Dynamo two nights a week from next week, which should help to tame The Block NZ.
