HD Ratings: TV3 Turkey Goes Cold

TV3’s The Great Food Race apparently didn’t leave viewers wanting more.

Sunday’s live finale averaged only 3.7% – 3.9% of the key demographics, compared to  6.3% – 9.8% for TV One’s foodie rival MasterChef NZ and 7.0% – 10.1% for TV2’s movie, The Smurfs.

The Great Food Race has struggled from its launch, and was always going to given it was taking on a cooking contest icon like MasterChef  and with its first half-hour competing with current affairs hit Sunday.

Kudos to TV3 for trying to freshen up the genre with an ambitious newcomer but launching it at the same time — and in virtually the same slot — as MasterChef was a recipe for disaster.

The show’s failure to rate also has hindered lead-out The Blacklist, which averaged 4.7% – 5.5% on Sunday to finish third after TV One’s Offspring season finale (5.0% – 8.7%) and TV2’s Agents of SHIELD (6.3% – 8.9%).

SHIELD lead-out The Tomorrow People also won its slot, with 4.7% – 6.1%, while TV One’s Mr Selfridge (2.1% – 2.8%) seesawed with TV3’s Hawaii Five-O (2.0% – 2.5%).

Sunday’s peak-hour HD channel ratings and shares were:

  • Adults 18-49: TV One, 6.4 rating/20.0 share; TV2, 7.0 rating/21.8 share; TV3, 5.4 rating/16.7 share
  • Adults 18-39: TV One, 6.0 rating/20.4 share; TV2, 6.7 rating/22.6 share; TV3, 5.2 rating/17.6 share
  • Adults 25-54: TV One, 7.9 rating/22.8 share; TV2, 6.7 rating/19.2 share; TV3, 5.5 rating/15.8 share
  • HHS: TV One, 7.9 rating/23.3 share; TV2, 8.6 rating/25.3 share; TV3, 5.0 rating/16.4 share.

TV3 fared better Saturday with its crossover CSI episodes: the first averaged 3.5% – 4.1% and the second, 4.0% – 5.8%.

TV One’s HD crime drama Endeavour averaged 1.3% – 3.3% and TV2’s network movie premiere of Contagion, 3.1% – 4.6%.

TV2’s premiere of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island easily dominated Friday, with an 8.5% – 11.01% average, but its double-episode off Arrow on Thursday didn’t fly as high.

The first hour largely won its slot, averaging 6.0% – 6.4% against CSI (3.2% – 6.4%) and Mr Selfridge (1.9% – 4.2%).

But the second hour (3.9% – 5.6%) was beaten by TV3’s premiere of Bodyshockers (4.6% – 7.1%).

Earlier in the night, TV3’s Three Day Nanny (2.9% – 5.0%) matched TV One’s The Art of the Architect (2.2% – 5.1%) but neither could challenge TV2’s Police Ten 7 (10.2% – 13.2%) and Motorway Patrol (9.9% – 12.5%).
