HD Ratings: TV3’s Grand Design Pays Off

TV3’s Grand Designs NZ brought the house down on Sunday.

The premiere averaged a whopping 8.7% – 11.8% of the commercial demographics, to deliver the channel extraordinary channel shares of 20% – 35%.

It did so off the back of sturdy ratings for The Block NZ: Villa Wars (7.3% – 7.7%) and ahead of Satisfaction’s debuting 3.4% – 4.7%.

TV2’s network premiere off Star Trek: Into Darkness surprisingly didn’t prosper — 3.3% – 4.8% —  with another premiere as its lead-in, Monsters University (4.3% – 9.4%).

TV1 also took a hit, with Sunday averaging an unusually low 4.4% – 8.0%, Topp Country 4.4% – 7.1%, Winter 1.4% – 4.8% and Ordinary Lies 0.6% – 2.8%.

As a result, TV3 scored a rare Sunday night win in three of the four key demos and was edged out in the fourth by TV1 because of One News’ popularity:

TV3’s new movie strategy on Saturday also paid dividends, with the network premiere of The Croods averaging 5.3% – 8.1% to win three of the key demos (in which TV3 also won the night) and The Patriot 2.3% – 4.8% (which won the 25-54 demo).

The Croods hammered TV2’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest but the re-run recovered in its second half to average 4.7% – 7.3% overall.

And on Friday, a Graham Norton Show re-run (4.8% – 5.5%) proved to be a better time for most viewers than TV2’s premiere of Best Time Ever With Neil Patrick Harris (3.5% – 7.7%), which finished second in the key age demos.

That was despite its lead-in, YouTube clips special Dogs Make You Laugh Out Loud (5.1% – 9.2%), easily winning the 7.30 hour against TV3’s Bullseye (1.1% – 3.3%).

At 9.30 TV3’s Ewen Gilmour Westie Legend 4.4% – 7.2% beat TV2’s premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race (3.2% – 4.4%).

Even so, TV2 won the night in all the key demos, with commanding channel shares of 20% – 28.6%:
