HD Ratings: Viewers Tune Into Nashville

TV One’s belated debut of Nashville proved competitive in its 9.30 Wednesday slot, rating higher than predecessor Hostages and beating TV3’s Bouncers.

The series that went to air in the US in October 2012 averaged 2.4% – 4.6% of the key demos and retained most of its viewership over the hour.

It finished second to TV2’s Once Upon a Time (3.3% – 5.4%) and ahead of Bouncers (2.1% – 3.2%).

Nashville even out-rated lead-in House Husbands (2.2% – 3.9%) in all the key demos except adults 18-49.

Dominion Post TV critic Jane Clifton said even those highly resistant to country music would have been hypnotised by the “soap, sex, glorious accents, costumes and flinty moneyed villains, but above all, music by T Bone Burnett”.

Concurred the NZ Herald’s urbanely urban Nick Grant: “The sensational selection of songs is almost enough to make me a country convert.”

But it was TV2 that dominated the night with its unassailable mix of soap (Shortland Street’s 12.1% – 19.7%), reality (My Kitchen Rules’ 9.8% – 14.0%) and comedy (The Big Bang Theory’s 10.4% – 15.7%, 2 Broke Girls’ 8.1% – 11.3%).

However, the network could take little pride in Once Upon a Time’s win at 9.30, given the steep fall-off from its lead-in.

Wednesday’s peak-hour HD channel ratings and shares were:

  • A18-49: TV One, 4.6 rating/16.8 share; TV2, 9.9 rating/36.3 share; TV3, 4.1 rating/15.1 share
  • A18-39: TV One, 3.7 rating/15.6 share; TV2, 7.9 rating/33.1 share; TV3, 4.4 rating/18.3 share
  • A25-54: TV One, 5.9 rating/18.6 share; TV2, 10.8 rating/33.8 share; TV3, 4.9 rating/15.3 share
  • HHS/k: TV One, 6.5 rating/20.5 share; TV2, 11.4 rating/35.9 share; TV3, 4.6 rating/14.6 share.
