HD Ratings: Walking Dead in a League of Its Own

Season five of The Walking Dead hit the ground running on Monday, averaging some of it highest ratings yet.

The premiere averaged 8.0% – 10.8% of the major demographics, which are staggering numbers for a 9.30 slot.

It won the hour in all the key demos opposite TV One’s Castle (1.0% – 5.7%) and TV3’s movie She’s Out of My League (5.6% – 6.6%).

The top ratings reflect the zombie drama’s triumphant return in the US, where it set another ratings record (as did the return of American Horror Story: Freak Show — Sky doesn’t divulge SoHo ratings but in the US AHS:FS notched up a new high for the FX channel and has been renewed for a fifth season; strong US ratings for Gotham also saw its first season extended for another six episodes).

Back here, The Walking Dead did lose 2-3 points over the hour, starting off the back of Wentworth’s impressive 8.9% – 11.3% and sturdy ratings for comedies Ground Floor (9.5% – 10.4%) and an improved Cougar Town (7.8% – 9.2%), both of which largely beat TV3’s X Factor Australia.

TV One’s Criminal Minds also had a good night, averaging 3.9% – 9.4% for its 200th episode, and rating above 6.0% in all the key demos except 18-39.

Monday’s peak-hour HD channel ratings and shares were:

  • A18-49: TV One, 6.3 rating/20.9 share; TV2, 9.1 rating/30.4 share; TV3, 5.9 rating/19.7 share

  1. Good start to the new season. Is this to be the last? TBH, the show was getting tired the last time around.
