HDTV Heads-Up: True Brits Dust-Up — Harry Potter vs Simon Cowell

TV2 will be rolling out an HD heavyweight to battle TV3’s The X-Factor USA in its first week on air.

Simon Cowell’s anticipated talent quest hit will screen in two-hour instalments 7.30pm Thursdays and Fridays from September 22.

TV3 doesn’t yet know if X or its Thursday stablemate, Rove LA, will air in HD, as it’s still investigating the cost and feasibility of taking an HD satellite feed (the programmes will air only hours after their US broadcasts).

But TV2 will be using HD to dent the appeal of Friday ‘s X-Factor with its free-to-air premiere of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, setting the scene for what could be a brutal ratings contest in the countdown to Christmas.

Other free-to-air movies in HD of the week starting September 17 will include the NZ-made Bloodlines (TV One, 8.30pm Saturday), The 40 Year Old Virgin (TV3, 8.30pm Sunday) and GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra (TV3, 8.30pm Monday).

September 17-23’s also notable for:

  • the return of The Middle (TV2, 8pm Sunday)
  • Everybody Loves Raymond’s Doris Roberts guest starring in Grey’s Anatomy (TV2, 9pm Tuesday)
  • the final of Underbelly NZ: Land of the Long Green Cloud (TV3, 9.30pm Wednesday)
  • a repeat of Underbelly NZ’s unofficial sequel of sorts, Underbelly: The Mr Asia Story (TV3, midnight Thursday).
