HDTV Ratings: April 15-17

TV3’s HD free-to-air premiere of Alvin and the Chipmunks last night easily won its slot with 5-12 year-olds but didn’t strike the right note with older audiences.

They opted for TV2’s back-to-back sitcoms or TV One’s North and Sunday.

The series finale of North won in the 18-49 and 25-54 demos, but Alvin’s appeal among household shoppers with kids saw it beat both North and Two and a Half Men.

This Sunday, TV3 will double-bill two HD blockbusters – Bee Movie and Slumdog Millionaire – to try to build its Sunday night viewership on the eve of resuming series programming with the May 1 return of Modern Family and House.

Modern Family also will air Easter Monday, instead of Campbell Live, while the network’s other Sunday HD attraction, The Good Wife, will return on May 8, but an hour later at 10.30pm.

TV3’s HD premiere of The ITM Fishing Show on Saturday was no match for TV One’s HD alternative, Hyundai Country Calendar, drawing a third to a half of its audience in the major demos.

On Friday, TV3’s HD line-up of Glee, The Graham Norton Show and Come Fly With Me continues to be competitive, with Norton gaining traction against TV2’s American Idol, although its viewership was down slightly because of TV One’s Da Kath & Kim Code special.
