HDTV Ratings: February 26-27

Who can blame the free-to-air networks for screening wall-to-wall pap when a drama as outstanding as Homeland languishes for viewers against formulaic fossils like Criminal Minds and Desperate Housewives.

At least Monday’s episode held most of its 25-54 year-old gains from the previous week, averaging 6.7% of TV3’s target audience compared to Criminal Minds’ 9.5% for TV One and Desperate Housewives’ 11.0% for TV2.

Homeland's Damian Lewis

And it posted its highest 18-49 rating yet: 6.3% versus Minds’ 7.8% and Housewives’ 10.4%.

The gap was much wider in the 18-39 and household shoppers demographics. But while Homeland’s HHS rating slipped from 7.0% to 5.1%, its 18-39 rating jumped from 4.8% to 5.3%.

TV3’s HD comedy duo, Last Man Standing and Modern Family, also were up markedly in each demo except HHS, where viewership slipped.

But TV One and TV2 still dominated the 7.30pm hour with their reality fare.

Desperate Housewives is holding steady for TV2 while its new HD stablemate, Revenge, out-rated it among HHS — 15.6% vs 14.6% —  and was barely a point behind in the other key demos.

That left TV One’s Person of Interest and TV3’s CSI to scrap over the crumbs, with the former largely having the edge (especially among HHS, where it was nearly twice as popular).

Earlier in the evening, TV2’s Shortland Street continued its domination, rating higher than any other Monday night show.

On Sunday night, TV2’s HD re-runs of The Big Bang Theory from the beginning are starting to challenge TV One’s Politically Incorrect Guide to Grown-Ups.

The 25-54 gap narrowed from four rating points the previous week to less than one, although Grown-Ups’ viewership was steady on 10.0%.

And in the 18-49 demo, Big Bang won with 9.6% compared to Grown-Ups’ 8.3%; with 18-39, Bang was nearly two points ahead and with HHS, two points behind.

HD lead-out Mike & Molly’s 18-39 rating jumped from 8.9% to 10.7%, and was up by a similar margin with HHS and 18-49. But it posted the biggest gain with 25-54, from 6.6% to 10.4%.

At 9.30pm, TV3’s The Big C is showing signs of recovery, especially among HHS, improving from 2.1% the previous week to 5.2%, making it more popular with this demo that SD lead-in House.
