HDTV Ratings: October 13-16

Nearly half of the country watched last night’s Rugby World Cup semi-final between NZ and Australia.

TV One narrowly won the contest, with 659,600 people aged five-plus, followed by Sky Sport 1’s 653,300, TV3’s 397,800 and Maori TV’s 262,700.

Together, the four channels accounted for 89% of live viewing.

While TV One had more eyeballs overall, Sky Sport 1 was the winner among 25-54 year-olds, drawing 17.8% versus TV One’s 14.8% and TV3’s 11.7%.

Sky also dominated in the 18-49 stakes, with 15.5% versus TV One’s 13.3% and TV3’s 12.2%.

Last night’s other HD drawcards, TV2’s sitcoms Mike & Molly and The Middle, rated lower than normal because of pre-game coverage on the other channels but still held up remarkably well.

Sunday’s free-to-air RWC coverage rated higher than Saturday’s semi-final between France and Wales: 25-54 – TV One 9.6%, TV3 6.4%; 18-49 – TV One 8.3%, TV3 5.8%.

Sky Sport 1 had a much higher viewership, with a 25-54 rating of 15% and an 18-49 rating of 13.1%.

On Friday night, TV3 dominated play with The X Factor USA: 10.9% of 25-54s, 10.1% of 18-49s, 8.4% of 18-39s, 14.1% of household shoppers with kids.

TV2’s HD opposition, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, rated 7.8%-8.5% in these demographics.

On Thursday, TV3’s last-minute HD replacement for a postponed X Factor, a re-run of the movie, Night at the Museum, finished third with a 25-54 rating of 6.7% and an 18-49 rating of 5.3%, which led to Rove LA suffering its lowest ratings yet: 3% of 25-54s and 2.2% of 18-49s.
