HDTV Ratings: September 6

The live season finale of The Block NZ helped TV3 to win the night on Thursday but couldn’t turn its new musical drama into a smash hit.

The Block NZ averaged 11.4% – 15.8% of the key demographics, peaking with 22% of household shoppers and 19% of 25-54 year-olds in its last quarter-hour.

It largely won its two-hour slot, but couldn’t out-rate TV2’s Police 10-7 in any of the major demos and also was beaten by the season premiere on Motorway Patrol in the 18-39 demo.

While the finale provided a strong kick-off for Smash, the Broadway drama couldn’t sustain viewership over the hour.

It opened with 9.9% of 25-54s but closed with only 3.0% and suffered an even more dire decline among HHS, from 13.0% to 3.7%.

Over the hour Smash averaged 4.6% – 6.6% against Auckland Daze’s 3.9% – 7.3% (like the previous week, its audience roughly halved over the half-hour).

Smash’s performance was summed by up the headline of this morning’s review in The Dominion Post: “Top cast but Marilyn Monroe musical not so hot.”

“Even if musical theatre isn’t your bag,” critic Jane Bowron wrote, “Smash is worth a look because it’s got Anjelica Huston and Debra Messing in it.”

  1. Did you watch Smash, Philip? I actually loved it … why aren’t there more people like me 🙂 I know I’m off topic but YAY – Indiana Jones is out on Blu-ray next week 🙂

  2. I had higher hopes for the premiere, Trevor. It opened brilliantly but the rest of the hour was disappointingly bland. While the musical sequences were great, the characters will need more depth and edge to keep me hooked.

  3. Police 10-7 had more drama and Motorway Patrol had more ‘smash’ … lol.
