MasterChef NZ’s Goose is Cooked

TVNZ has axed MasterChef NZ after five seasons but is sticking with My Kitchen Rules NZ.

“We’re delighted with the performance of our first series of My Kitchen Rules NZ, which is the most watched show in a highly competitive timeslot and is successfully holding The Block and X Factor’s performance in check,” TVNZ’s head of content Jeff Latch told advertisers.

“Viewers are increasingly demanding innovative new content formats and our significant commitment to new local productions is a reflection of this trend.

“This also means we have to say goodbye to some existing older formats. We’ve decided not to renew MasterChef New Zealand.

“It’s had a great five season run but it’s time for us to move on to newer local multi-night opportunities.”

These include the just-announced twice-weekly drama Filthy Rich and Our First Home, which TVNZ says will tap into the nation’s obsession with DIY and the property market from a fresh perspective.

“Our viewers love local content and so do we,” Latch says. “They’re always our most watched shows on air and online and they underpin our success as a business.”

NZ On Air has committed more than $25 million to upcoming projects for TVNZ in its latest funding round, including a follow-up HD doco on the Gloriavale community — the first rated exceptionally well — and Word Up, a comedians-driven quiz show from South Pacific Pictures that’s expected to air in HD on TV One.

  1. Why axe a show which consistently out performs its competitors? I know MC sheds viewers every year but it still out rates MKRNZ if we compare ratings. How can MKRNZ be competitive when it’s beaten by The Block and only wins the 5plus share? If I were Prime I would produce MCNZ for 2015 to counter the other networks. Aside from this it looks like 2015 will be a very competitive year with Our First Home on One, MKRAU on 2 and The X Factor NZ on 3, presumably all three will launch head to head in Feb or March. I’m also wondering if TV2 will launch The Voice NZ at some point.
