More Episodes for SoHo Sitcom

On the eve of SoHo belatedly premiering season four of Episodes, Showtime has renewed the Matt LeBlanc comedy for a fifth run of nine episodes.

The show’s renewal coincides with another Showtime staple, Nurse Jackie, about to wrap after seven seasons.

If only NZ networks treated Episodes with as much respect as Showtime.

TV1 quickly consigned it to late-night and while SoHo deserves plaudits for picking it up, delaying season four’s premiere by six months is inexcusable when the channel fast-tracks most of its US content.

Moreover, it’s not as if SoHo’s had better comedies deserving of priority, with both Happyish (which Showtime has yet to renew) and Catastrophe being mediocre at best.

In season four, which starts on July 23, Matt faces a financial crisis, Sean (Stephen Mangan) and Beverly (Tamsin Greig) get dragged back to LA to shoot more episodes of Pucks! and a sex tape emerges.

Episodes remains funny — occasionally, very much so — after all these years,” Newsday reports, “so why has everyone forgotten about it except for Showtime?

“Maybe not everyone: LeBlanc has received multiple Golden Globe and Emmy nominations, all deserved.

“But what about Mangan and Greig, whose characters remain perfectly, hilariously, beset by that terrible Hollywood contagion: Self-loathing co-mingled with self-preservation.

“I, for one, am glad Pucks! is back, and Episodes, too.”
