My Sky+ Movies … in June

June’s scarcely bustin’ out all over with top titles on Sky’s premium movie channels but among the obscurities to catch in HD are The Call and The Iceman.

The Call could have been a quickie B-grade thriller phoned in by director Brad Anderson (The Machinist).

But instead it’s riveting and inventive escapism with a great hook: Halle Berry’s emergency services operator becomes an abduction victim’s lifeline when she calls her from the boot of a car hurtling down the motorway.

Also worth setting My Sky+ for is The Iceman, in which Boardwalk Empire’s fugitive FBI boss Michael Shannon plays a real-life contract killer in an absorbingly low-key, low-budget dramatisation of Richard Kuklinski’s life and crimes.

He murdered more than 100 people over 20 years yet his unsuspecting wife and daughters knew him only as a devoted family man.

The cast includes Chris Evans, James Franco and, as a sleazy hood, Friends’ David Schwimmer.

Other June highlights include Behind the Candelabra, The Heat and The Way, Way Back.

  1. JB Hi Fi in NZ are selling two Blu-rays for $25 – selected movies only. These include The Call and The Iceman. I will probably grab them at lunchtime today.

  2. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did. The Call’s picture quality is outstanding.
