New Season: Thunderbirds Not Enough Go

TV2’s Thunderbirds Are Go did not have enough go to win the seven o’clock hour in most of the commercial demographics.

Sunday’s double-episode premiere won its slot among household shoppers with kids.

But it finished third to TV3’s The X Factor NZ and TV1’s Sunday and Our First Home in TV2’s target demo, 18-49 year-olds.

It also was out-rated by TV1’s shows in the 25-54 stakes and by TV3’s in the 18-39 race.

Overall, it rated 5.1% —11.1% of the key demos while lead-out Black-ish averaged 5.3% – 8.2% for its premiere.

XFNZ averaged 7.3% – 7.7% and OFH, 5.2% – 9.1%.

Resuming its Sunday Premiere Movie slot boosted TV2’s ratings sharply, with a repeat of Men in Black 3 averaging 7.1% -12.3% to easily beat TV1’s In the Club (3.1% – 5.3%) and TV3’s Aotearoa Driving Stories re-run (2.5% – 4.2%).

As a result, TV2 clocked up commanding channel shares and ratings in all the key demos:

TV2’s Saturday premiere of Oscar-winner Silver Linings Playbook (2.4% – 4.6%) lost in the 25-54 and 18-39 demos to CSI (2.7% – 4.1%) but beat the aging crime drama in the 18-49 and HHS/k demos.

TV3 covered itself in glory on Friday when Jono & Ben (5.1% – 8.0%) won three of the four key demos and The Graham Norton Show (7.3% – 8.2%), 7 Days (10.3% – 11.5%) and Fail Army (7.8% – 8.3%) scooped all four.

TV2’s movie The Hunger Games went hungry for viewers, averaging only 3.2% – 4.1%.

Shifting Jono & Ben to 7.30 has proved a masterstroke for TV3 while 7 Days continues to go gangbusters in its fifth year on air and first season in HD.

Their sandwiching of The Graham Norton Show helped the network to win the night in all the key demos.

  1. Thunderbirds belongs in a Saturday night slot, not the competitive Sunday slot.

  2. Due to TiVo not updating their EPG until last Thursday, I missed loading up the two-part first ep and didn’t see it. Have downloaded it and will watch it before ep 3 goes out on Sunday.

  3. I know I’m off topic again but in my opinion Daredevil is by the far the best super hero show ever, of all time. It’s so darn good 🙂

  4. With the exceptions of Playbook, CSI and Gotham (all of which are trapped on MySky), we chose to forgo the dire offerings across the board and had a marathon GoT recap with season four, intespersed with 12 Monkeys (Tor) and SG1 reruns (which curiously is a bug that has bitten my s.o.).

  5. Well, watching Thunderbirds last night — thank goodness something decent will take over around July.

  6. I see in the UK that Thunderbirds has been relegated to the Saturday morning 8.00 am slot.
