New to Amazon Prime in August

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan will be the first Amazon Original series that Amazon Prime subscribers will be able to stream on compatible devices in Dolby Atmos.

Dolby revealed over the weekend that Amazon Prime would soon support its object-based audio format, starting with the 4K-HDR spy yarn, which goes live on August 31.

“Amazon has yet to comment on technical details so we do not know which devices that will be capable of delivering streaming service’s best audio streams,” FlatPanelsHD reports.

The company’s Fire TV and Fire TV Cube both support Dolby Atmos and are likely candidates. In addition, devices such as Nvidia Shield and Xbox One as well as TVs such as LG’s latest OLED TVs support Dolby’s latest audio format. Apple TV 4K and iTunes will gain support later this year with tvOS 12.

LG NZ says its OLED and Super UHD TVs, from the SK850 upwards, should be able to decode the Atmos stream given they already do so with Netflix Dolby Atmos titles.

The eight-part Jack Ryan, which already has been renewed for a second season, stars A Quiet Place’s John Krasinski as the Marine-turned-rookie CIA analyst on the trail of suspicious financial transactions that lead him and his boss James Greer (Wendell Pierce) to Mousa Bin Suleiman (Ali Suliman), the Syrian-based terrorist mastermind behind a horrific attack in Paris.

With the help of government epidemiologist Dr. Cathy Mueller (Abbie Cornish) and Suleiman’s wife Hanin (Dina Shihabi), Ryan races to stop the extremist from unleashing an insidious assault on U.S. soil.

In this week’s cover story, Variety magazine reports Krasinski “instantly responded” to the chance to play Clancy’s hero, even though his agent told the producers he wasn’t interested in doing TV.

“I don’t know if I wanted to be Jack Ryan just to be Jack Ryan, though I probably would have been,” Krasinski says. “It was really the pitch of a long-form television version. Maybe movies weren’t the best medium for Jack Ryan, really, with the books being so long and rich and detailed with tradecraft that with long-form television you could really investigate the character in a real way, similar to the books.”

Says Variety: “After striking out at the box office with [Chris] Pine-starrer Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit in 2014, Paramount was intent on resuscitating the franchise that spawned hits such as The Hunt for Red October and Patriot Games for the ever-expanding television market. Jack Ryan is a sort-of prequel, introducing the character just four years into his espionage career.”

Incidentally, Paramount is soon to re-issue all the Jack Ryan movies on 4K-UHD Blu-ray.

Also new to Amazon Prime next month will be the documentary series, All Or Nothing: Manchester City (August 17) and live Association of Volleyball Professionals coverage (August 16-19, August 30–September 2).
