New to Lightbox in April

Escape at Dannemora’s Patricia Arquette next will be seen in a Lightbox exclusive, The Act.

The character-driven true-crime anthology series premieres this month on Hulu and will be launched with a four-episode debut on April 4, after which new episodes will stream weekly.

From writers Nick Antosca (Channel Zero) and Michelle Dean, it’s based on Dean’s 2016 Buzzfeed article, Dee Dee Wanted Her Daughter To Be Sick, Gypsy Wanted Her Mom To Be Murdered, and explores the tragic relationship between young Gypsy Blanchard (Joey King) and her overprotective mother Dee Dee (Arquette).

Chloë Sevigny (Big Love), Calum Worthy (American Vandal) and AnnaSophia Robb (The Carrie Diaries) co-star.

Lightbox’s only other NZ premiere will be the four-year-old, single-season Good Girls Revolt (April 3), which refers to three young female researchers at a weekly newsmag in 1969 New York.

“Any show that begins with the Rolling Stones’ Altamont concert and includes Light My Fire can’t be all bad,” said Variety. “Plus, it’s an interesting look at journalism back when it operated under a totally print-oriented metabolism.”

Quipped The Guardian: “If Mad Men were a band, Good Girls Revolt would be the tribute act.”

Lightbox also will pick up seasons one of 9-1-1 (April 2), six of The Americans (April 28), 10 of SpongeBob Squarepants (April 10), and 1-7 of Mad About You (April 4), which is the latest ’90s sitcom to be revived — as a limited-series sequel starring the original leads.

Leaving the platform next month will be Feud: Bette & Joan (April 4).
