New to SoHo in January

Season three of SoHo’s True Detective will open with a double-episode on January 14 and screen the same time — 3pm — as its HBO premiere.

The eight-part series will explore the mystery around a macabre crime in the Ozarks that deepens over 30 years.

Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Stephen Dorff (Immortals), Carmen Ejogo (Selma), Josh Hopkins (Cougar Town), Scoot McNairy (Halt and Catch Fire), Mamie Gummer (The Collection) and Jodi Balfour (Rellik) star.

HBO this week released a second trailer for the series, which “provides some more insight into the season’s character dynamics”. Observed IndieWire:

Women have been a sticking point for True Detective in past seasons, with critics accusing the show of casting female characters into one of a few, predictable camps. (They’re wives, mothers, prostitutes, or otherwise discardable street denizens.)

But Season 3 is looking to correct a few past mistakes, including elevating the relevance and dynamism of its notable female lead Amelia Reardon, played by the great Carmen Ejogo.

As an Arkansas schoolteacher connected to two children who go missing in the 1980, Reardon forms a relationship with Detective Wayne Hays (Mahershala Ali) that gets mixed up with a mystery enveloping them both for decades to come.

Another brooding crime drama, I Am the Night, will screen 9.30 Mondays from January 29.

It stars Chris Pine as a troubled reporter whose search for the parents of an adopted teenager (India Eisley) exposes the dark side of Hollywood.

According to Screen Realm, “It looks to be a moody piece of television, packing in intrigue, twists and occult-type horror.”

Other premieres include season six of Strike Back (8.30 Sundays from January 27) and the mid-season resumptions of Shameless (9.30 Mondays from January 21) and A Million Little Things (8.30 Tuesdays from January 22.

And returning for Box Set Saturdays will be Get Shorty (S2), Strike Back (S5), Escape at Dannemora and Ray Donovan (S6).
