Schedule Watch: August 4

Next month TVNZ 1 will screen the 1987 Rugby World Cup documentary By the Balls ahead of its global release. A date has still to be announced for the broadcast premiere of the NZ International Film Festival crowdpleaser — extra screenings have been scheduled in Auckland for August 8 — which has triggered the interest of international distributors. “It’s very exciting that two major distributors are bidding for it and that this documentary will be released internationally, but not before New Zealand audiences see it on TVNZ 1,” producer and co-director Charlotte Purdy (Erebus Operation Overdue) says.

Tonight’s Sunday (TVNZ 1, 7.30) goes inside the purpose-built emergency ward at Auckland Zoo where vets are drawing on expertise from all around the world to save kākāpō from a lethal fungal disease. And a six-year-old’s family shares the story of their daughter’s recovery from septicaemia after losing all her limbs in the battle to survive.

New episodes of Real Time With Bill Maher return this week to SoHo and SoHo2. The mid-season premiere features Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, Marianne Williamson, Josh Barro, Gov. Jennifer Granholm and Buck Sexton.
