SoHo Sneak Peeks Sci-Fi Series Ahead of Rapturous New Show

SoHo will preview the Channel 4 sensation Utopia a week ahead of HBO’s smoking hot new drama The Leftovers taking over Game of Thrones’ 8.30 Monday slot.

The sneak peek will screen on June 23 as a teaser for the series starting later in the year and will fill the gap between Thrones’ fourth season finale and the series premiere of The Leftovers on June 30, which will air here within 24 hours of its HBO debut.

The Guardian ranked the six-part Utopiaone of the best, most original dramas of the year …

“This is the scenario: The Utopia Experiments, a cult graphic novel, has gained notoriety for having predicted global disasters. Five of its fans meet in an online forum and are given details of a fabled, unreleased sequel.

“Just hearing about this puts them in grave danger from a shadowy organisation called The Network whose operatives – mainly a pair of hitmen, wheezy Arby and sharp-dressed Lee – are leaving a trail of dead people in their wake.

“These killers also have a signature question: ‘Where’s Jessica Hyde?‘ And no one seems able to answer – not that it would save their lives if they did.

“As a whole, it’s a heady brew of pregnant prostitutes, blackmail, global politics, drug testing, assassinations, insanity, genetics, frame ups, experiments, the future of mankind – you name it, it’s here somewhere.”

The Telegraph said if the first episode was “allusive to a fault, and rather self-consciously provocative, it was also gripping stuff.

“Its cinematic leanings extended to a slick score and sleek widescreen camerawork, the storytelling was confident, and a talented British cast dived gamely in, especially in the more outlandish or blackly comic moments.”

Concurred The Independent: “A dystopian fantasy has been populated with relatively real characters and genre terrors mixed with familiar human ones – that the boy you like might be interested in someone else, or that your alcoholic mum might one day not come out of her stupor.

“And all of it is delivered with great visual style.”

Meanwhile, The Leftovers is billed as “an original look at The Rapture ” — if that’s what’s happened to humanity.

Based on the novel by Tom Perrotta, the series follows Justin Theroux as Kevin Garvey, a father of two and the chief of police in a New York suburb, who is trying to maintain some semblance of normalcy after 2% of the world’s population has abruptly disappeared without explanation.

The rest of the cast includes Amy Brenneman (Private Practice), Christopher Eccleston (Thor: The Dark World), Liv Tyler (The Lord of the Rings), Charlie Carver (Desperate Housewives), Max Carver (Desperate Housewives), Carrie Coon (Gone Girl), Ann Dowd (Side Effects), Michael Gaston (The Mentalist), Emily Meade (Boardwalk Empire), Annie Q (The Reluctant Professor), Amanda Warren (The Adjustment Bureau) and Chris Zylka (The Amazing Spider-Man).

The Mirror says there are five things you need to know about The Leftovers while Time magazine reckons  “the trailer offers just enough creeping dread to promise one hell of a gripping series“.

  1. Been waiting for someone to pickup Utopia – I’m glad it’s the UK version and not the remake America is making ATM. Now, if only we can get that Swedish clone series Real Humans.

  2. These two shows look very interesting. SoHo is just getting better month by month with all of the great shows they are showing and picking up.

  3. I watched the 1st episode of Utopia on SoHo last night. I think that the show is very good. The only disappointment was that the show screened on SoHo with an aspect ratio of 1:78:1 when the correct aspect ratio of this show is 2:35:1. This show screened in the correct aspect ratio in the UK.
