SoHo Fast-forwards the End of Mad Men

The final season of Mad Men will screen here closer to its US air date than any of its predecessors.

SoHo has scheduled it to screen 7.30 Tuesdays from April 7, which will be less than two days after it unspools on AMC.

That’s not as swift as SoHo’s simulcast of Game of Thrones but is in line with how SoHo has fast-tracked final seasons of other series, like Justified.

It’s also a big improvement on previous seasons of Mad Men, which typically lagged 1-3 weeks behind the US.

Among the revelations in a cover story for The Hollywood Reporter is how January Jones (Betty) auditioned twice to play Peggy.

Creator Matthew Weiner told her, “Well, there’s another role, but I don’t really know what’s going to happen with her.”

“He didn’t have any scenes for me,” Jones says, “so he quickly wrote a couple.”

Also back next month on SoHo are Orphan Black (season three of which will air 9.30 Mondays from April 20), Silicon Valley (season two, 8.30 Thursdays from April 16) and Veep (season four, 9.00 Thursdays from April 16).

No word yet on when Episodes’ fourth season will debut — it screened two months ago in the US — but it may succeed a Channel 4 comedy SoHo will premiere on April 8 called Catastrophe.

About an Irish woman and American man facing unexpected parenthood after a fling in London, it will air 9.30 Thursdays.

“With nimble dialogue and bursting with jokes, Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney’s breakneck comedy sucks its humour from a cesspool of human self-loathing,” said The Guardian.

“Is it funny?” asked The Telegraph after its January UK premiere. “I’m going to duck that one like the coward I am at this point.

“Personally I’m a connoisseur of crude humour and Catastrophe is certainly crude – c-word, school-playground scatologically crude.”

But by episode five of six, The Independent declared it to be “one of the funniest British comedies of the past five years” and Channel 4 renewed it “just two episodes into the series”.

SoHo’s other newcomer in April is Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1 (April 9), an Oscar-winnng documentary about America’s traumatised war veterans, who are killing themselves at a rate of 22 a day, as told through the harrowing work of responders at the national Veterans Crisis Line.

And if you missed their original broadcasts, SoHo will box set Game of Thrones S4 (April 4), Veep S3 (April 11), Orphan Black S2 (April 11), The Escape Artist (April 18), Penny Dreadful S1 (April 18) and Fortitude (April 25).
