Odd Couple Sitcoms Coming Soon

SoHo will refresh its Thursday comedy block next month with odd-couple newcomers Divorce and Insecure.

Divorce marks Sarah Jessica Parker’s return to series TV 12 years after Sex & the City ended its HBO run.

It will screen 8.30 Thursdays from October 13, ahead of Insecure at 9.30.

From Catastrophe creator Sharon Horgan, Divorce stars Parker as a mother-of-two who starts to reappraise her marriage (to Sideways’ Thomas Haden Church) and her life.

Horgan told US TV critics she drew inspiration from the 1989 black comedy The War of the Roses.

“Right before I met SJ, I watched that again. [But] you can’t keep that kind of level up. You can’t kill that many cats and dogs on a TV series.”

Time magazine reckons core HBO viewers staying tuned after this “upper-middle-class comedy of manners” might experience whiplash with Insecure.

“It’s a show whose laughs are built on just how well its creators understand its South L.A., hip hop-inflected milieu not often seen on TV,” the magazine says of Insecure’s “assertive specificity“.

But Rae isn’t worried about audience alienation.  “I always talk about Curb Your Enthusiasm,” she told Time.

“I’m not Jewish, and there’s a lot of stuff that’s [culturally] specific to that show that I didn’t get, that I had to look up! And that’s fine—I still enjoyed the show. I feel that way about our show.”

Also joining SoHo’s Thursday line-up will be season two of Blunt Talk (10pm from October 6).
