SoHo Saddles Up Westworld

Expect HBO’s hotly anticipated Westworld to air Monday nights on SoHo from October 3.

Sky’s premium drama channel has yet to confirm this but today HBO announced it would screen the controversial sci-fi reboot from October 2.

It would be odd if SoHo didn’t rush it to air within 24 hours of HBO in the slot synonymous with another signature fantasy from the cable network, Game of Thrones (which will end its run with season eight in 2018).

Westworld is described as a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin, exploring a world in which every human appetite, no matter how noble or depraved, can be indulged.

Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s adaptation of Michael Crichton’s 1973 film stars Anthony Hopkins in his first series role as an inventor who runs an adult amusement park populated by lifelike robots.

“Building on the incredibly evocative concept of the original film, we wanted to pose the question: If you could be completely immersed in a fantasy, one in which you could do whatever you wanted, would you discover things about yourself that you didn’t want to know?” Nolan says.

His team’s already had to defend Westworld for its use of rape and violence against women.

“It was definitely something that was heavily discussed and considered as we worked on those scenes,” Joy told TV critics.

Westworld is an examination of human nature. The best parts of human nature — paternal love, romantic love, finding oneself — but also the basis for parts of human nature —violence and sexual violence.

“Violence and sexual violence have been a fact of human history since the beginning. There’s something about us — thankfully not the majority of us — but there are people who have engaged in violence and who are victims of violence.”

Hopkins’ co-stars include Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson and Sidse Babett Knudsen.
