The Bachelor Wins Hearts and Ratings

Three’s Sunday night season premiere of The Bachelor NZ won its slot in the core age demographics.

It averaged 6.6% of 25-54 year-olds, 6.4% of 18-49s and 6.7% of 18-39s. My Kitchen Rules, which started half-an-hour later, averaged 4.3% of 25-54s, 3.5% of 18-49s and 2.8% of 18-39s.

The Bachelor’s popularity helped the network movie premiere of lead-out Pitch Perfect 2 to beat TVNZ 2’s Mad Max: Fury Road in the  18-49 and 18-39 demos.

But Mad Max out-rated it in the 25-54 race, although TVNZ 1’s Broadchurch won the 8.30 hour in this demo, with a 5.8% rating.

After an underwhelming launch, the British whodunit has evolved into a big hit for TVNZ 1, while its odd-couple stablemate, Abandoned Engineering, rapidly shed viewers, typically halving its audience over the course of the hour.

The Bachelor’s premiere also dented Hyundai Country Calendar’s appeal, which averaged 6.4% of 25-54s, 4.5% of 18-49s and 2.7% of 18-39s.

But it did beat TVNZ 2’s The Simpsons in the 25-54 and 18-49 demos.

TVNZ 1 won the night in 25-54s while Three easily led in the 18-49 and 18-39 demos.
