Tonight in HD: May 13

SoHo Highlight: Magic City (Sky 10, 8.30, 5.1) Series premiere: Ike Evans, owner of Miami’s most glamorous hotel, needs his 1958 New Year’s Eve concert to be a smash — so to ensure its success, he makes a deal with a mobster. “After an episode or two, when you sort out the characters and how their lives bang together in the dark, elegant shadows of late-1950s Miami Beach, you’ll find rich drama, well written and beautifully styled,” said the New York Daily News. But TV Guide argued “the writing telegraphs every trite and derivative twist” while New York magazine dubbed it “enervating and undeservedly full of itself”. In the middle of the pack was USA Today’s conclusion: “It may be possible that, after The Sopranos, the Godfather films and the collected works of Martin Scorsese, there is still more to say about mobsters. But nothing in Magic City would lead you to believe that’s true. Looks good, though. If only that were magic enough.” ✮✮✮✮

Sky Movies Premiere: The Lincoln Lawyer (Sky 20, 8.30, 5.1) Before you can say, “John Grisham,” this is actually a dramatisation of a Michael Connelly novel – although it could be mistaken as the premise for a formulaic TV series: slick, laidback lawyer solves crimes and win cases from the back of a Lincoln sedan that chauffeurs him from courtroom to courtroom. The movie transcends most of its contrivances, glides towards a nifty twist and boasts a hugely entertaining turn by Matthew McConaughey. But it never convinces while trite subplots muddy its central conflict: how do criminal lawyers sleep at night knowing their clients are guilty? Marisa Tomei, Ryan Philippe, William H Macy and Bryan Cranston co-star. (2011) ✮✮✮
