Tonight in HD: May 14

SoHo Highlight: Game of Thrones (Sky 10, 8.30, 5.1) Theon completes his master stroke; in King’s Landing, the Lannisters send Myrcella from harm’s way just in time; Dany vows to take what is hers;  Qhorin gives Jon a chance to prove himself. “After last week’s slightly slow episode – which had the feeling that it was dealing with a few things that simply had to be got out of the way before the story could continue – this week saw series two take off explosively again,” The Daily Telegraph reckons. Concurred The Independent: “The slow burn nature of Game of Thrones means that at some point there will be a payoff for investing time watching the less exciting episodes. The pace may be slow but when the rewards come they are big and this week was a fantastic episode that was well worth the wait.” Or, as Entertainment Weekly put it: “The moment where characters start to lose control is an exciting point in every story. And on tonight’s Game of Thrones, some of our favorites battled to hold onto power in the face of naked rebellion.” ✮✮✮✮

Sky Movies Premiere: Ironclad (Sky 20, 8.30, 5.1) The Hollywood Reporter called this medieval malarkey “a gore fest aimed at indiscriminate action fans” whereas Empire likened it to all sieges: “Straddled between uproarious schoolboy tosh and serious historical movie, this still offers enough dismemberments, royal tantrums and portcullis-rammings to make for a lively Saturday night out.” Jonathan English (Minotaur) directs Paul Giamatti, Jason Flemyng, Brian Cox, Derek Jacobi and Game of Thrones’ Charles Dance. (2010) ✮✮

Home & Away (TV3, 5.30) Heath’s legal action brings Hayley back to the Bay; John snaps, putting his school run at risk; Leah tries to clear the air with Brax. ✮✮

Friends (TV2, 6.30, R) After getting kicked out of his apartment, Ross moves in with Chandler and Joey, driving all three of them crazy. ✮✮✮✮

Shortland Street (TV2, 7.00) Sarah considers second chances; Murray risks it all for a walk on the wild side; Nicole’s dreams come true. ✮✮✮

Last Man Standing (TV3, 7.30, 5.1) Vanessa blames Mike when she finds out they were not invited to a neighbour’s party; Eve accidentally damages Mandy’s car. ✮✮

Modern Family (TV3, 8.00, 5.1) Phil is so preoccupied with impressing a prospective new client (guest star Greg Kinnear) that he doesn’t notice him being overtly inappropriate with Claire. Expect an average episode, although the AV Club said Me? Jealous? “charts some new ground by pitting the show’s two drama queens and temporary housemates, Cameron and Gloria, against each other. Cameron is jealous of Gloria’s girly bonding with Lily, and Gloria, in turn, feels like Cameron is undermining her skills as a homemaker. While we’ve seen these two butt heads in the past, their relationship is hardly as played out as, say, the non-stop bickering between Cameron and Mitchell. But what really makes the story work is that their hostility is driven by genuine insecurity, rather than mere competitiveness or passive-aggression: Cameron worries about Lily not having a mother, and Gloria, in turn, feels like a domestic failure.” ✮✮✮✮

Criminal Minds (TV One, 8.30, 5.1) The BAU searches for a kidnapper when a scared and emaciated young boy is found in the Arizona desert and another boy goes missing; Morgan revisits his own past and tries to bond with the boy who has been found. ✮✮

Desperate Housewives (TV2, 8.30, 5.1) Susan discovers the identity of the father of Julie’s baby; Orson makes it his duty to nurse Bree back to health; Lynette is furious when the twins are evicted from their apartment. (Next week Desperate Housewives will be pre-empted by a double-episode of Revenge.) ✮✮

Person of Interest (TV One, 9.30, 5.1) Reese and Finch track a person of interest leading a double life. ✮✮

Revenge (TV2, 9.30, 5.1) During the lead up to Emily and Daniel’s engagement party, things quickly start to unravel; Victoria tries to regain the upper hand by using Conrad’s own father against him. ✮✮

Saving Grace (TV3, 11.35, 5.1) The team investigates the death of a woman, but Grace is lured to the prime suspect, a high-profile architect with an unconventional sex life. ✮✮

  1. Just seeing a photo of Joffrey makes me want to punch him in the face … I’m not a violent person but Joffrey is SO mean and cruel. 🙂
