Tonight in HD: May 25

Season Finale: Sherlock (TV One, 8.30, F) James Moriaty has planned the crime of the century: The Tower of London, the Bank of England and Pentonville Prison – all sprung open on the same day, as if by magic! But Moriarty’s plans don’t stop there. “With warped mind games, jabs at the British news media and a showdown between the super-sleuth and his mighty opponent, this week was a fantastic finale on which to close the second series of Sherlock,” said The Independent. “For non-Sherlockian members of the audience, the title of this story referenced the Reichenbach Falls, the waterfall into which Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty supposedly plunged to their deaths during a fierce tussle in ‘The Final Problem’. For Arthur Conan Doyle the adventure was to be Sherlock Holmes’ last one so that he could focus on more serious writing. However, due to the public backlash at the death of the world’s most famous detective, Conan Doyle resurrected him. Despite the thin source material, the writers produced a stunning conclusion that suited the series.” But The Daily Telegraph thought it “strained a little too hard for effect. One of the great joys of this super-cool reboot, masterminded by Steven Moffatt and Mark Gatiss, has been the way in which it pays homage to the original stories while twisting their plots into smart, up-to-date thrillers. Here, writer Stephen Thompson had been left a little too much to his own devices, inventing a dualistic plot which pitted master criminal against master detective in an endless game of cat and mouse.” Sherlock will continue next week but in an SD re-run of series one. ✮✮✮✮

SoHo Premiere: Mann v Ford (Sky 10, 8.30, 5.1) HBO documentary about the 647 Ramapo Indian plaintiffs and their team of lawyers who took on Ford Motors and the Environmental Protection Agency in a class-action lawsuit. Ion Cinema called it “yet another sad account of big industry committing vile acts of social injustice against a community already at the bottom rung of society. The film shows a Native American clan who hold family close, but who’s unfounded bad reputation has left them lepers in their own community.” Indie Wire lamented its one-sided approach but predicted “Mann v Ford will make your stomach churn in outrage and your heart ache in sympathy”. Glee (TV3, 7.30, 5.1) Much to Blaine’s chagrin, his big-shot Hollywood actor brother Cooper comes to visit. Matt Bomer (ChuckTruCalling and the yet-to-screen here White Collar) guest stars. “Once again, Glee‘s brightest moments come from guest stars and/or bigger than life circumstances,” Rolling Stone said. “Cooper Anderson’s charms compensated for a lot of overall meh moments in what Glee execs promise was a big ramp up to the end of season three. We can only imagine where next week’s disco fever will take us.” ✮✮✮
