HDTV Ratings: September 5

TV3’s penultimate episode of The Block NZ helped the network to win Wednesday night but couldn’t stop viewers from deserting its new drama series, The Killing.

The whodunit that originally aired on SoHo averaged 5.6% – 7.7% of key demographics, which is a strong result for a 9.30 drama on TV3.

But viewership halved over the hour. For instance, The Killing opened with 11.0% of TV3’s target demo, 25-54 year-olds, but closed with only 4.9%.

The same decline happened with household shoppers (13.0% > 5.9%), 18-49s (11% > 4.6%) and 18-39s (10.0% > 4.0%).

Meanwhile, lead-in The Block NZ averaged 12.9% – 14.5%, with viewership building over the two hours — which left TV2’s traditionally dominant comedy block struggling with mostly single-digit ratings.

At 9.30, TV One’s HD crime drama Castle averaged 3.8% – 7.0%, and out-rated The Killing — albeit narrowly — in only the 25-54 demo.

Not surprised viewers left this, it was dull and boring. I didn’t make to the end, having nodded off about half way through.

  2. What about the people who may have My Sky-ed it to watch it another time? I did that 🙂
I see the second season of Homeland is coming soon. WOW … that’s quick 🙂

  3. I really enjoyed The Killing. Watched both series on Soho. Not an action-packed series but a very intelligent, suspenseful drama with a great storyline and which spends a lot of time developing the characters. Definitely not dull and boring, but did take three or four episodes to fully get into the series. After that I was hooked, though.
