Melissa Stokes will replace Simon Dallow as the weeknight anchor of 1 News at Six.

Simon Dallow to sign off from 1News at Six after remarkable two-decade tenure

TVNZ is today announcing that Simon Dallow will be stepping down as a presenter of 1News at Six on 28 November.

Simon has presented TVNZ’s most watched and most streamed programme for two decades, bringing professionalism, integrity, and dedication to the role.

Simon has guided the nation through numerous significant and breaking news events, from the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes, to the Christchurch Mosque attacks, Whakaari White Island Volcanic Island eruption, Covid-19 Pandemic, Cyclone Gabrielle and coverage of numerous General Elections.

Simon joined TVNZ as a presenter in 1993, first appearing on Newsnight and other 1News bulletins and then on Agenda and Q+A before taking the helm at 1News at Six weeknights alongside former co-host Wendy Petrie.

His calm stewardship has earnt him the trust of New Zealand audiences. His commitment to delivering the stories of the day with accuracy and impartiality has earned him the respect and appreciation of viewers and colleagues alike.

TVNZ Chief Executive Jodi O’Donnell expressed gratitude for Simon’s immense contributions.

“He’s part of why 1News at Six continues to reach 1 million New Zealanders on broadcast TV as well as being TVNZ+’s most streamed show. His departure marks the end of an era for 1News at Six, and we are deeply grateful for his years of service. ”

TVNZ is pleased to announce Melissa Stokes will move from her weekend presenting role to anchor the bulletin 5-nights a week.

Melissa’s career with TVNZ spans more than two decades and has included a variety of reporting roles and time as 1News’ Europe Correspondent.

She is respected and trusted by viewers, having presented across TVNZ’s news slate including 1News at Six weekends, a position she’s held since 2019.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have someone of Melissa’s calibre appointed as our lead presenter for 1News at Six,” said O’Donnell.

“She’s done an exceptional job fronting weekends and this experience alongside the strong leadership role she plays in our newsroom makes her a natural successor.

“Her enduring relationship with our audience will help guide them through this transition for our biggest show.”
