Shortland Street confirmed for expanded run in 2027 – thanks to NZ On Air Funding |
TVNZ and South Pacific Pictures are pleased to confirm that Shortland Street will return for its 2027 season – with an expanded four-night-a-week run – thanks to continued funding support from NZ On Air. Announced this morning, NZ On Air funding, together with the Screen Production Rebate, will enable the continuation of New Zealand’s longest-running drama in the new year. From February 2027, Shortland Street will move from three new episodes per week to four on TVNZ 2 and TVNZ+. The expanded schedule will deliver the character-driven storylines, humour and heart audiences love, alongside the real-life and topical issues that keep the series deeply connected to everyday New Zealanders. Heading into its landmark 35th year on screen, Shortland Street remains one of Aotearoa’s most recognisable and loved television programmes. The increased episode volume, delivered with a reduced public funding ask, reflects the strength of the show’s commercial momentum and the enduring loyalty of its audience. TVNZ’s Chief News and Content Officer, Nadia Tolich, says, “NZ On Air’s continued support helps us keep this much‑loved series on screen for New Zealanders to enjoy. “Audiences have a long‑standing connection with Shortland Street, and we’re excited to bring the much-loved drama back in 2027 with an expanded four‑night‑a‑week schedule that reflects both its significance within our content slate and its popularity with viewers.” South Pacific Pictures Chief Executive, Kelly Martin, says, “We’re immensely proud of Shortland Street’s continuing legacy. “This last season has seen both cast and crew deliver some of their best work, and NZ audiences are enjoying the ride. Returning to four nights a week is something we’re all delighted about, and we look forward to continuing to entertain and delight New Zealanders.” Funding support was announced today as part of NZ On Air’s Round Tahi. Additional TVNZ projects supported include Country Calendar 2027, Celebrity Treasure Island (S8), and My Family Mystery (S3) among others. |
