BBC BritBox Soon to Bow Here?

Could global BBC streaming service BritBox at last be about to launch here?

You wouldn’t think so, given the BBC’s newly-expanded content deal with Sky and on-going ties with TVNZ.

But six years after going live in Australia and expanding around the world under 100% BBC ownership, a BritBox NZ could be imminent.

And it could coincide with TVNZ broadening its meagre FAST channels line-up with BBC options — although this possibility also seems unlikely since the broadcaster’s FAST strategy has been to offer content not easily accessible elsewhere in the NZ market (the Seinfeld FAST channel notwithstanding).

Nonetheless, vigilant long-time reader Leo reports overnight he has just completed a survey about streaming:

It looks like the streaming service BritBox is finally coming to NZ along with a new BBC Brit Freeview channel replacing Duke+1. Also it looks like TVNZ will be doing a deal with the BBC for some FAST channels. All preliminary at the moment, but there could be some announcements in the next few weeks.

When the BBC marked its 100th birthday in 2022, Stuff TV editor James Croot argued “if UKTV and BritBox can happily co-exist in ‘the lucky country’ [Australia], why the hell can’t they offer it here?”

But if a local BritBox is on the horizon, it won’t be via TVNZ. “There’s no BBC FAST channel in the works currently,” a spokesperson says. “And no changes to Duke+1, either.”

So if the market research cited by Leo does point to a BritBox launch that isn’t stand-alone, it would need to be through Sky or Prime Video as an add-on or third-party subscription.

  1. Wow, thanks Philip for the write up, apologies if this all turns out to be more smoke than actual fire. Furthermore, you may also want to contact Sky as there was a section about BritBox partnering up with Neon as an add-on subscription like Amazon with many other streaming services. Maybe it’s Sky that might do a deal and replace it’s WBD FAST channels on ThreeNow. Hopefully, this early publicity hasn’t spooked them. All specitalive at this moment but a survey is usually a strong indicator something’s coming. — Leo.

  2. I have a sneaky suspicion that if this happens I could see a CBeebies shutdown happening like in Australia, meaning Sky Kids being the only 24/7 kids channel in New Zealand. Please, Paramount, bring back the proper Nickelodeon channels or just launch Paramount+ here. Sky Kids has been a lot more reliant on local garbage like Tralala and Takaro Tribe recently. — Callum.

  3. All good, Leo, and interesting to contemplate. Let’s see if anything comes out of the woodwork. I reached out to TVNZ and Freeview several hours before posting so not having had a response by now suggests your initial speculation might be on the mark.

  4. Fingers crossed we get some sort of confirmation. I do wonder Philip if TVNZ Duke’s days are numbered with all this speculation. — Leo.

  5. Thanks Philip for asking TVNZ, this must mean Sky will reduce its WBD content in favor of BBC FAST channels. Interesting times ahead. — Leo.

  6. I too have completed the same survey as Leo. I am a regular reader but I have not provided my name on this post to avoid any potential legal repercussions of sharing content from the survey.
