Big Bang Sparks Renewal Explosion

TV2 can anticipate at least another three seasons of the top-rating The Big Bang Theory but the future of two other mid-week HD staples – Two and a Half Men and The Mentalist – is less certain.

CBS followed up its three-season renewal of Big Bang with further runs of its Wednesday stablemates Mom, 2 Broke Girls and Two and a Half Men, which form TV2’s most-watched two-hour block of the week.

But it’s not known if Men will be back for a full season run or an abbreviated finale season, following series-low ratings in 2013/14.

Another TV2 crowdpleaser, Mike & Molly, also will return after a shortened fourth season while long-running CBS dramas Criminal Minds, Person of Interest, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles and CSI have got the thumbs-up for another year.

Person of Interest and Criminal Minds continue to be strong performers for TV One — it will re-run double-episodes of the latter’s eighth season late-night Wednesdays from March 26 — but the network won’t be surprised or sorry to see CBS axe its low-rating Hostages.

CBS’ pick-ups also are good news for TV3, which can look forward to its aging crime franchises being rejuvenated with backdoor pilots for spin-offs.

CSI isn’t the warhorse it used to be for TV3 but its NCIS combo has scored some of its highest ratings so far this season.

NCIS and its sister show are the number one and two dramas on US TV while CSI’s 200th episode scored the series its highest US ratings in two years.

Other CBS survivors that air here in HD include The Good Wife, Hawaii Five-O and Blue Bloods but the fate of one of TV2’s most popular dramas, The Mentalist, has still to be decided.

Reports Deadline Hollywood: “The long-running drama has been on the bubble and, unlike Hawaii Five-O, Blue Bloods or The Good Wife, whose ratings have been on par or lower, Mentalist is not owned by CBS, making off-network money for the company the way the other three shows do.

“But The Mentalist is a very important property for Warner Bros TV with a very lucrative syndication deal and strong international sales, so expect the studio to fight hard for a seventh-season renewal, especially after the post-Red John creative reboot of the show was deemed successful.”
