As commendable as this $399, 20-disc collection is, it’s not definitive. Universal Pictures Video has since released in the US the same set with the bonus of the post-series finale telemovie, The Plan, which can only be bought here separately on Blu-ray or as part of the DVD Complete Collection. Universal NZ hasn’t decided if it will re-release the Blu-ray Collection with The Plan but because it’s region-free, the US edition can be imported. This otherwise mammoth compilation includes the miniseries, seasons 1-4, and the telemovie, Razor, as well as all of the extras left off the original DVD season releases. If you’re as unfamiliar with the show as apparently Emmy voters were, it’s a post-9/11 “re-imagining” of the star dreck namesake that ran for one season in 1978. About the last remnants of human civilisation trying to reach the “mythical” planet of Earth before being intercepted by the Cylons — man-made robots that have turned against their creators — its appeal and relevance stretch beyond sci-fi to viewers who relish allegorical storytelling as sophisticated as its special effects. The extras exclusive to Blu-ray are good but being able to see this series in 1080p for the first time, complete with extended cuts of some episodes, is what makes the Blu-ray of Battlestar Galactica so spectacular — although be aware the intentionally grainy cinematography may have you wondering, “What the frak?”
