Mary and Max is animation at its most magical, a deliriously funny, weirdly enchanting yet trenchant odd-couple tale that’s more satisfying than a chocolate hot-dog pig-out. Using the stop-motion technique popularised by Wallace and Gromit, Fantastic Mr Fox and Coraline, it chronicles the 20-year pen-pal friendship of a lonely Melbourne girl and an obese, middle-aged New Yorker who swap phobias, woes and chocolate bars. The attention to detail and humanity is astounding, the scoring sublime, the vocalisations pitch-perfect and the outcome immensely moving. Extras include a commentary by writer/director Adam Elliot, who won an Oscar for Harvie Krumpet but astonishingly wasn’t nominated for this.
