There are few movies you want to revisit as quickly as Shutter Island. Martin Scorsese’s latest exercise in suspense and panache relies on too many contrivances to convince yet it is partly because of these that, once the end credits roll, you yearn to peel apart the layers of Hitchcockian intrigue that make Shutter Island so hypnotic and evocative of the conspiratorial McCarthy-ist era in which it’s set. Leonardo DiCaprio plays a grief-stricken, guilt-ridden US Marshal reluctantly investigating with partner Mark Ruffalo the disappearance of an inmate from an isolated asylum for the criminally insane run by Ben Kingsley and creepy cohort Max von Sydow. Of course, not everything is as it seems, neither to the lawmen nor the audience, and the movie spookily hooks into everything from atomic age paranoia to experimental psychiatric and Holocaust horrors, replete with an extravagant production design that will have you thinking you’re delusional.
