Welcome to the “United States of Zombieland,” in which the home of McDonald’s has been overrun by the living dead with an appetite for “human Happy Meals”. As stylish as it is stomach churning, Zombieland can’t match its inspiration, Shaun of the Dead, for wit, pace and thrills but the special effects are better and Woody Harrelson hits a home run as a baseball bat-swatting, natural-born killer of the undead. Expanded from a pilot for a TV series that CBS rejected, Zombieland would have been funnier and sharper with tighter writing and editing – a stopover at Bill Murray’s place runs too long – but the first half is genre genius and the HD video is splat-tacular. In addition to the DVD’s filmmakers’ and cast commentary, making-of shorts and seven deleted scenes, the Blu-ray has a picture-in-picture track. A sequel is in the works, and probably will be released with this movie’s original title, Another Day in Zombieland.
