Coming Soon: Solos, The Underground Railroad

An anthology drama series teeming with Hollywood heavyweights will premiere next month on Amazon Prime Video.

The seven-part Solos, which stars Morgan Freeman, Anne Hathaway and Helen Mirren, Uzo Aduba, Nicole Beharie, Anthony Mackie, Dan Stevens and Constance Wu will stream from May 21.

It’s billed as exploring “the strange, beautiful, heart-breaking, hilarious, wondrous truths of what it means to be human”. Reads the blurb:

The series spans our present and future and illuminates that even during our most isolated moments we are all connected through the human experience. These character-driven stories contend that even during our most seemingly isolated moments, in the most disparate of circumstances, we are all connected through the human experience.

Among the directors are Scrubs star Zach Braff, Black Monday’s Tiffany Johnson and Nowhere Boy’s Sam Taylor-Johnson.

Amazon’s also released a trailer for another May newcomer, The Underground Railroad, a 10-episode limited series based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Colson Whitehead (Moonlight’s Barry Jenkins directs).

It chronicles Cora Randall’s (Thuso Mbedu) desperate bid for freedom in the antebellum South after escaping a Georgia plantation for the rumoured Underground Railroad, a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil.

Over the course of her journey, Cora is pursued by Ridgeway (Joel Edgerton), a bounty hunter who is fixated on bringing her back to the plantation she escaped; especially since her mother Mabel is the only one he has never caught.

As she travels from state to state, Cora contends with the legacy of the mother that left her behind and her own struggles to realize a life she never thought was possible.

The Underground Railroad will stream from May 14.
