Coming Soon: Unforgotten S4

Next month Sky will belatedly premiere the latest season of one of TV’s best whodunits, Unforgotten (Vibe, 8.30 Mondays from July 26).

It’s the first case for DCI Cassie Stuart (Nicola Walker) and DI Sunny Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) since 2019’s S3.

The six-hour mystery revolves around the discovery of a headless, handless corpse in a freezer, apparently frozen since the victim’s disappearance 30 years earlier — when he encountered five police trainees out celebrating passing their training programme.

It went to air in the UK in February and was released here last week on DVD.

“The return of Unforgotten … does feel like putting on a pair of comfy old slippers,” the Mail on Sunday said.

“Here, the detectives seem real, mostly, the camera is held steady, thankfully, and it knows what it does and does it in the most splendidly sure-footed way.”

Or, as the Independent quipped: “The warm, intelligent detective show masterfully straddles nihilistic noir and Midsomer twee.”

The only reservations were expressed by The Arts Desk: “There comes a time when every successful formula can do with an overhaul, and that particular bell may be tolling for Unforgotten.”
